It’s two o;clock in the morning…
Not a creature is stirring,
not even a mouse,
BUT
outside I hear something moving around.
Last night he came…the bear… and got into the garbage can that was put up under the house, for protection, Ed thought. But he … the bear… found it and made a mess strewing it all around. Tonight Ed put the garbage in the CAR, to be safe. It is a good thing, because I know that must be the bear that I hear now outside my window. I just now went to the front door to see if I could hear Big Foot any better, but I could not turn on the outside light (don’t know where the switch is) so I didn’t get to see him. No siree, I did NOT open the door.I am thinking right now that I am glad we are not camping. All weekend I have thought how much fun it would be to pitch a tent right here amongst these beautiful trees in the mountains. I remember the time we camped in the Pizgah National Forest. When we got to the campground, there was not a single space available in the entire park. The ranger told us we could camp on the fire trail, but there were no facilities. “Fine,” chirped Allen. “We like to be close to nature; we want to get away from city life and enjoy the beauties of the forest. It is important for us to teach the children what this wonderful country of ours was like before ‘civilization’ moved in.”
And close to nature we were! We had to dig a latrine, the old fashioned trail way; ration our drinking water, cook on the open fire (by choice.) We camped right beside a stream, and the children enjoyed building dams and playing in the cold, cold water. We cooled our watermelon in the stream, and slept all night hearing through our dreams the music of the babbling brook. One night we were awakened by a piercing scream that scared us all to death. It was a screech owl, and I had never heard one in the wild before.. nor have I since.
What an experience we had that weekend! Unforgetable. I wish i could post some of the pictures, but they are packed away in an album somewhere.
Well, I don’t hear the rumbling any more, so I guess the BAR has gone back OVUH THAR. So I will say my prayers and go to sleep.
All night, all day, angels watching over me, my Lord,
All night, all day, angels watching over me.uh oh. I just heard him again. He has not left us!
“Thar’s a Bear… over thar…
